Sometimes the most romantic thing you can do is simply disappear. No restaurants to book, no plans to coordinate, no noise competing for your attention. Just the two of you, the bush, and a sky that reminds you both how small — and how lucky — you are.
Shona at Rupping Bush Retreats was not designed with romance as a selling point. It was designed for genuine rest. But as it turns out, genuine rest — the kind that only comes when you are completely removed from ordinary life — is one of the most romantic things there is.
The lodge sits inside Shona Langa Nature Estate in the Waterberg region of Limpopo, approximately 2.5 hours from Johannesburg. It is entirely private. No other guests, no shared spaces, no staff moving through the property. Just the lodge, the land around it, and whatever you choose to do with the time.
What Makes It Work for Couples
The layout is important. Shona is a two-bedroom, four-guest lodge — but most couples book it for just the two of them, which means you have a full private lodge to yourselves. Both bedrooms, both bathrooms, the full kitchen, the boma, the hot tub, and the game viewer.
There is something about having all of that space to yourselves that changes the quality of a weekend. You are not guests in someone else's environment. You are home — just somewhere extraordinary.
The hot tub at night, the boma fire beside it, the stars above — this is not something you plan. It just happens, and it is exactly what it sounds like.
The Wood-Fired Hot Tub
It deserves its own section. The hot tub at Shona is wood-fired — which means it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to heat, and that waiting is part of the experience. You light the fire, you pour a drink, you sit outside while the bush settles into its night routine. By the time the water is ready, the stars are out and the temperature has dropped enough that getting in feels exactly right.
There is no electricity in the hot tub. No jets, no buttons, no settings to adjust. Just very warm water, a fire crackling beside you, and the sounds of the Waterberg at night. Giraffe sometimes pass nearby. The frogs are always loud. It is genuinely magical.
The Boma at Night
Shona has a private boma with a built-in braai and firepit. Firewood is provided. There is something about eating outdoors in the dark, by firelight, with no city glow on the horizon, that strips away the performative quality of a restaurant dinner and leaves something more honest in its place.
Bring good meat, good wine, and no plans for the evening. Let the fire decide the pace. This is a better date than anything a restaurant can offer.

The Best Time of Year for a Romantic Escape
Winter (May to August) is the most romantic season in the Waterberg. Cold nights make the hot tub essential rather than optional. The bush is drier and quieter. The stars are clearest. You will genuinely need to be close to the fire — and to each other.
Summer (October to February) offers warm evenings, dramatic lightning storms that light up the sky, and lush green landscapes that feel almost tropical. Thunderstorms in the bush, watched from a covered stoep with something cold in your hand, are not to be underestimated.
Spring (September) is when the bush comes back to life. The first rains arrive, the birds return, and the mornings are particularly beautiful. If you can only go once, this is a strong contender.
Special Occasions
Shona is well suited to anniversaries, birthdays, and proposals — not because it is designed for them, but because the environment does the work. If you want to mark something meaningful, a private lodge in the Waterberg does that more effectively than almost anything else you could plan.
Mariska handles every booking personally. If you have something specific in mind — a particular room setup, something to arrange on arrival — just mention it when you book. She responds personally and will do what she can to make it happen.
What to Bring for a Romantic Weekend
Food and drink: The kitchen is fully equipped — bring everything you want to cook and drink. There are no restaurants on the estate.
Ingredients for a good braai: Meat, boerewors, something for the fire. Firewood is provided.
Warm layers: Even in summer, evenings in the Waterberg can be cool. In winter, bring a proper jacket.
No plans: The best thing you can bring is an empty schedule. Let the bush decide what happens next.
Getting There
