Two and a half hours north of Johannesburg, the city falls away completely. The traffic, the noise, the relentless pace — all of it dissolves somewhere on the N14. By the time you turn off onto the gravel road, you're already breathing differently.
A long weekend in the bush doesn't require a week off work or a flight across the country. It just requires knowing where to go. Shona at Rupping Bush Retreats sits inside the Shona Langa Nature Estate in Limpopo — a private, gated wildlife estate where giraffe roam freely and the nights are genuinely, properly dark.
This is everything you need to plan the perfect long weekend from Johannesburg — from when to leave to what to pack, and how to make the most of every hour you're there.
When to Go
The honest answer is that Shona is wonderful any time of year — but the experience changes with the seasons.
Winter (May to August) is arguably the best time. Days are warm and sunny, nights are cold and perfect for the hot tub and boma fire. The bush is drier, which means game is easier to spot near waterholes. You'll need layers for the evenings.
Summer (October to February) brings lush green landscapes, dramatic afternoon thunderstorms, and incredible birding. It's hotter, and afternoons can be very warm — but mornings and evenings are magical.
Shoulder seasons (March–April and September) offer the best of both worlds — mild temperatures, good game sightings, and quieter weekends.
Whatever time of year you go, the stars at Shona will surprise you. There is no light pollution here — just the Milky Way in full clarity on a clear night.
Getting There from Johannesburg
The drive from Johannesburg to Shona takes approximately 2.5 hours on a good run. The route is straightforward — mostly tar road, with roughly 9 kilometres of well-maintained gravel road at the end. A standard car handles it perfectly.
The Route at a Glance
From Johannesburg: Take the N14 towards Krugersdorp and continue northwest towards Thabazimbi.
Stop in Thabazimbi: About 30 minutes from the estate — stock up on groceries, fuel, and anything you've forgotten.
Final stretch: Approximately 9 km of gravel road into the estate. Take it slowly and enjoy it — you're nearly there.
GPS coordinates: Sent to guests after booking confirmation.
Our advice is to leave Johannesburg by midday on Friday to beat the worst of the traffic and arrive at the estate before sunset. Your first evening in the bush — cold drink in hand, fire starting, birds settling in for the night — is worth protecting.

What to Do With Your Time
Three days in the bush sounds short until you're actually there. Time moves differently at Shona. Here's how a long weekend tends to unfold.
Friday Evening
Arrive, unpack, and resist the urge to plan anything. Light the boma fire. Start the hot tub. Pour something cold. The bush will settle around you and the decompression begins. This evening is not about doing — it's about stopping.
Saturday
Wake up early — sunrise in the bushveld is genuinely worth setting an alarm for. Make coffee and take it outside. Then take the game viewer out for a morning drive while the air is still cool and the animals are active.
The Shona Langa Nature Estate is home to giraffe, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, impala and a wide variety of bird species. There's no guide — just you, the vehicle, and the estate to explore at your own pace.
Afternoons are best spent slowly. A long lunch. A nap. A book. Save the energy for a late afternoon game drive as the light turns golden, followed by a proper braai dinner in the boma.
Sunday
Another early morning drive if the first one didn't satisfy. Then a slow breakfast, a final walk around the property, and a check-out that doesn't feel rushed. The drive home is always quieter than the drive up — in the best possible way.
What to Pack
Shona is fully self-catering, so bring all your food and drinks. The kitchen is completely equipped — you just need to stock it. Here's what else to bring:
- Groceries for all meals — stock up in Thabazimbi on the way in
- Meat and wood for the braai — or buy wood locally
- Warm layers for evenings — even in summer, nights can be cool
- Sunscreen and a hat — Limpopo sun is strong
- Binoculars for game viewing and birding
- A camera — you will want one
- Insect repellent for evenings outdoors
- Any medications or personal toiletries — the nearest pharmacy is in Thabazimbi
Making the Most of the Hot Tub
The wood-fired hot tub is one of those things that sounds nice until you're actually in it at 10pm under a sky full of stars, and then it becomes the thing you talk about for weeks.
Light the fire about 1.5 to 2 hours before you want to get in. Full instructions are in the house guide. While you wait, have dinner, watch the fire, listen to the bush at night. Then get in. Stay as long as you like. There is nothing competing for your attention.
