Most people come to the Thabazimbi area for one reason — the bush. But stay a little longer and you will find that the Waterberg has more going on than most visitors expect. Here is everything worth doing in and around the area.
Shona Langa Nature Estate, where Rupping Bush Retreats is located, sits in the Thabazimbi district of Limpopo — in the heart of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, one of South Africa's most significant conservation areas. The landscape is distinctive: ancient mountain ranges, sparse bushveld, enormous skies. It does not look like the Kruger. It looks like somewhere older.
Thabazimbi town itself — about 30 minutes from the estate — is a practical base with all the essentials: supermarkets, fuel, hardware, a hospital, and a few decent restaurants. But the real reason to be here is the land around it.
Inside Shona Langa Nature Estate
Before looking further afield, the estate itself offers more than most guests expect. At 2,000 hectares, it is large enough to spend two full days exploring without repeating yourself.
- Self-drive game viewing — the game viewer is included with your stay. Giraffe, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, impala, warthog and over 200 bird species are resident. No dangerous animals — you can stop the vehicle anywhere.
- Walking and hiking — the absence of big five means you can walk freely on the estate. Morning walks along the dam are particularly good for birds.
- Fishing — the estate dams offer fishing spots. Bring your own gear.
- Mountain biking — the estate roads are suitable for cycling. Bring bikes if you have them.
- Birdwatching — over 200 recorded species. The birding is exceptional, particularly around the dam and waterhole areas.
- Stargazing — no light pollution. On a clear night the Milky Way is visible in full. Summer evenings after rain are exceptional.
Marakele National Park
Marakele National Park is the most significant attraction in the area and is worth at least a full day. It sits in the Waterberg mountains approximately 45 minutes from Shona Langa and is one of South Africa's lesser-known national parks — which means it is also one of the less crowded ones.
The park is home to the full big five: elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo. It also hosts one of the largest breeding colonies of endangered Cape vultures in the world, with hundreds of birds visible on the cliff faces.

Bela-Bela (Warmbaths)
Bela-Bela is approximately 55 km from Shona Langa — about 45 minutes to an hour depending on which route you take. The town is named for its famous hot springs, which have been a destination for South Africans for over a century.
The main resort — Aventura Warmbaths — offers natural hot spring pools, spa treatments, and a range of activities. It is popular with families and makes for a good half-day outing, particularly in winter when the hot water is most appreciated.
The town also has good shopping, supermarkets, restaurants, and fuel — making it a useful stop if you want a wider selection than Thabazimbi offers.
Zebula Golf Estate and Spa
Zebula is a luxury golf estate and spa approximately 38 km from Shona Langa. The golf course is one of the most scenic in Limpopo — designed around the natural bushveld landscape with game wandering the fairways. Non-golfers can use the spa and restaurant.
It is worth a visit for a meal or an afternoon even if golf is not your thing. The setting is beautiful and the food is consistently good.
Thabazimbi Town
Thabazimbi is not a tourist destination in the conventional sense — it is a mining town that happens to sit in one of the most beautiful areas of Limpopo. But it has everything you need for a comfortable stay in the bush.
- Checkers and Pick n Pay — stock up on groceries and braai supplies before heading to the estate
- Fuel stations — fill up here; the next option is further away
- Restaurants — several decent options in town for a meal out
- Hardware and farm supplies — useful if you forgot anything
Our advice is always the same: stop in Thabazimbi on your way in, stock up on everything you need, and then go dark. The less reason you have to leave the estate, the better your stay will be.
The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve
The Waterberg is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — one of only a handful in South Africa. The landscape is ancient: sandstone plateaus, endemic plant species, and a biodiversity that makes it one of the country's most important conservation areas.
Several private game reserves in the broader Waterberg area offer guided safari experiences, horse trails, and specialist birding tours. If you want a guided big five experience beyond Marakele, operators based in the area can arrange day trips.
Practical Notes for Visitors
- The area is malaria-free — no medication required
- No dangerous animals on Shona Langa estate — safe to walk freely
- Nearest hospital: Thabazimbi, approximately 30 minutes
- Cell signal: Variable on the estate — WiFi available at the lodge
- Roads: Mostly tar road from Johannesburg, with 9 km of gravel at the end — normal vehicles fine
- Best season: Year-round, but winter (May–August) offers the best game viewing conditions
Using Shona as a Base
One of the underrated advantages of staying at Shona is that you can use it as a base for day trips across the region without sacrificing the comfort and privacy of a private lodge. Marakele, Bela-Bela, Zebula and the wider Waterberg are all within reach for a day out — and then you come back to a lodge that is entirely yours, with a fire to light and a hot tub to get into.
It is a better model than staying in a game lodge where every activity needs to be booked and every meal is scheduled. Here, you move at your own pace, on your own terms. That is the point.
